PETA Blackmailing Clay Aiken? Clay Aiken, the runner-up in this year's "American Idol", is often both admired and ridiculed for the way he sings and the Broadway style he incorporates into his music, but a certain animal rights group has gone on an unlikely offensive against the singer that seems bred out of pure spite, rather than any worthwhile cause. The People For The Ethical Treatment Of Animals (PETA) have decided to turn their latest campaign, an ad featuring Triumph The Insult Comic Dog, into a showcase for just how ridiculous they can be. The ad features the rubber puppet with the slogan "Get Neutered. It Didn’t Hurt Clay Aiken," and according to an article by the Associated Press, PETA will run the ad with that line unless Aiken takes up the organization's message (to have pets spayed or neutered) on his own website. Apparently, this comes after the singer made a comment in a Rolling Stone interview about how he disliked cats and has felt "haunted" by one ever since he accidentally killed one as a teenager. MORE... PETA is of course no stranger to attacking celebrities for any injustice they see being committed against animals, but this seems to be (by far) the strangest insult to fly for the strangest reason and it's not really clear if the organization only meant it as a joke, or what they thought their attempt at blackmail might bring. The AP article goes on to say that Triumph ad-libbed the quote when the commercial was being filmed, and that PETA kept it when they discovered the story in Rolling Stone, but according to an article in the Chicago Sun-Times, PETA vice president Dan Mathews shrugged it off as a lark, saying, "If Clay Aiken intends on staying famous, he has to learn to take a joke." Perhaps if PETA wants to stay in business, they should stick to protecting animals, rather than slinging mud.
